1. What is an Arc Protection System (APS)?
An Arc Protection System (APS) is a proactive safety solution designed to detect and extinguish arc faults in electrical panels, substations, and medium- and low-voltage switchgear. An arc fault is an unintended electrical discharge between conductive parts, generating extremely high temperatures (10,000 ~ 20,000°C), intense pressure, and bright light. This phenomenon can lead to fires, equipment damage, and severe threats to human safety.
Why is APS Necessary?
- Protect Human Safety: Minimizes the risk of severe burns and injuries caused by arc explosions.
- Protect Equipment and Assets: Reduces material damage and extends equipment lifespan.
- Reduce Downtime: Enhances system continuity and operational stability.
- Comply with International Safety Standards: IEC 61850, IEEE 1584, KOEMA 0930~0932.

3. LS ELECTRIC APS Product Structure

Main Components:
- Arc Protection Relay (APR): Detects arc faults via optical signals and current sensors.
- Slave Unit (for protection area expansion):
- Point: Arc accident detection and location identification through point sensor
- Loop: Detecting broad area arc accident through loop sensor
- Selective:
- Arc accident detection and location identification through point sensor
- Apply high-speed semiconductor contact point (HSO, High speed output)
- Arc protection can be performed solely without APR
- Arc Eliminator Controller (AEC): AEC operation by receiving APR operation command through optical communication
- Arc Eliminator (AE): Quickly grounds to extinguish the arc fault.
Operating Principle:
- Optical sensors & CTs detect arc fault incidents.
- The APR precisely identifies the arc fault and sends a trip command within 1.5ms.
- The AE extinguishes the arc fault within 3.5ms.
- The circuit breaker (CB) cuts off the fault current, completing the safe shutdown process.
4. Practical Applications of LS APS
- Industrial Plants: Oil & gas, cement, steel, semiconductor industries.
- Infrastructure: Substations, airports, water treatment plants.
